The New American Dictionary Adds 11 Words for 2025
A primer on our evolving language
Language is fluid, and Americans have been getting creative. Sometimes it seems like we’re all speaking a different mother tongue. That’s why The New American Dictionary is releasing these 11 new words and definitions to its iconic lexicon. Now all English speakers will be on the same page irl. (Fun fact: irl was officially added in 2014!)
DEI (n.) (derogatory) – thinly veiled racism (also: sexism, ableism) used to promote segregation ex: “USAID is DEI.” “The FAA is DEI.”
DEI (n.) (original) – efforts to value all people and ensure equal access to opportunities
detention center (n.) – concentration camp
MAGA (n.) – Nazi
MAHA (n.) – eugenics
swasticar (n.) – Tesla
DOGE (n.) – Nazi cybercriminals
cost cutting (n.)(as done by DOGE) – stealing
cute winter boots (n.) – I.C.E.
ice (n.) – diamonds
Greenland (n.) – Greenland
Gulf of America (n.) – the social media-enabled pit of disinformation separating citizens desiring democracy and those duped into and/or willingly supporting tyranny over themselves
